Castro Urdiales (+ info)
Top Things to Do
Castro Urdiales conserves an interesting old quarter, with traditional narrow streets, perfect for taking a stroll before enjoying the local cuisine, one of the town's main attractions. Highlights of the local cuisine are the red bream and snails, accompanied by products from the municipality's booming canning industry. The anchovies in olive oil are particularly renowned.
There is also plenty of characteristic traditional architecture in the town, with rows of wooden balconies facing the gardens along the Paseo de Amestoy. Medieval in origin, it was officially recognised as a historical site in 1978. Some of its heritage buildings include the church of Santa María, the best Gothic structure in Cantabria (built between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries), the castle-lighthouse, situated alongside, and the beautiful bridge of Santa Ana.
The town's local fiestas are especially popular throughout Cantabria. Each year, people from all over the region flock to the town lured by the colourful Coso Blanco, a floral gala held at night, in summer, and the dramatic and spectacular nature of the Living Passion, at Easter.
The town also has a yachting club, with a strong tradition in rowing regattas.
