San Vicente de la Barquera, capital of the municipality, is a seaside town par excellence, as can be seen in its local traditions, customs and popular festivities: La Folía (multitudinous seagoing procession of Our Lady held on the second Sunday after Easter) and the Carmen procession (16th June).
San Vicente is one of the best-known and most beautiful places on the Cantabrian seaboard. An obligatory stopping point between Asturias and Cantabria, its geographical location has undoubtedly enhanced its development as one of the most popular tourist spots in the region.
The old town of San Vicente is also a charming spot, thanks to its church, castle and the remains of the town wall. The bridges add to the beauty of the town, with the majestic snow-capped Picos de Europa in the background. All this enhances the idyllic nature of this former fishermen's refuge, making it an ideal spot to relax and enjoy oneself.
The seaside tradition of San Vicente can also seen in the local cuisine, based on fish and seafood. A most popular dish is sorropotún or marmita barquereña, a stew made from tuna and potatoes.
